Fox Business — “SpaceX set to highlight ‘AMBITIOUS UPDATES’ at Q3 earnings”. Facts on this page cite the primary sources below, not the video.

Honest fence (read first): SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) reports Q3 2026 results today, Tue Oct 20, after the market closes, with an audio-only webcast at 4:30 PM ET (SpaceX IR, confirmed Oct 16). This is only its second report as a public company. Everything below about Q3 is an estimate by others. The Q2 numbers come from SpaceX's own filing, and the lock-up dates come from its IPO prospectus. We don't predict the results or the stock move. Results may be out by the time you read this, so check the release first. Our Oct 17 post covered the Starlink numbers to watch. This one covers the profit test, the AI spending and financing question, and Thursday's share release.

Editorial Thesis

Earnings day is when a story stock has to show numbers. For SpaceX, the question isn't only whether revenue grows. Q2 already showed $7.8 billion, up 92% from a year earlier. The bigger question is whether the AI build-out can keep being paid for. Then, two days after the report, a large block of pre-IPO shares becomes eligible to sell. A learner can track both with dates and filings rather than guesses.

Honest Verdict

Believe the filed numbers and the prospectus dates. Treat consensus as a range, because sources differ ($12.7B to about $13B in revenue, $0.13 to $0.15 in adjusted EPS). Treat the options-implied move as the size of swing traders are paying for, not a direction. Treat "up to 1.3 billion shares" as shares that can be sold, not shares that will be sold.

The baseline: what SpaceX filed for Q2 (8-K, Aug 4)

  • Revenue $7,814 million: Space $962M, Connectivity $4,291M, AI $2,561M. Q1 was $4,694M.
  • Loss from operations $(143) million. The AI segment lost $(1,257) million (Q1: $(2,469)M). Connectivity earned $1,656 million.
  • Net loss $(541) million, or $(0.09) per share.
  • Capital spending $18,369 million in the quarter, of which AI was $15,828 million, about double Q1's $7,723M.
  • Cash and marketable securities: $100 billion at quarter end; backlog $47.5 billion.

What analysts expect for Q3 (their estimates, not ours)

  • Bloomberg consensus (via Yahoo Finance, Oct 19): revenue $12.7 billion, adjusted EPS $0.15, adjusted EBITDA $6.59 billion. Connectivity: $4.45 billion revenue and $1.66 billion operating profit.
  • TipRanks: adjusted EPS $0.14 on revenue of "almost $12.9 billion."
  • Seeking Alpha (Oct 19): EPS $0.13, revenue about $13 billion.
  • A profit would be SpaceX's first as a public company. Q2 was a $0.09 per-share loss.
  • SpaceX's own goal: CFO Bret Johnsen indicated $100 billion in annual recurring revenue by year-end (per Yahoo Finance). That's a company target, so check whether tonight's ARR update moves toward it.

The financing question

  • Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas (note published Mon Oct 19, via Yahoo Finance): "Need for additional financing remains a key overhang for sentiment… This is the biggest risk to our model, and we do not want to downplay it." He models debt issuance of $60 billion in 2027, $80 billion in 2028 and $90 billion in 2029.
  • Reported, not filed: the Financial Times reported in early October that SpaceX is seeking about $40 billion in new debt to buy Nvidia chips (about $10B in bank loans and $30B in investment-grade bonds, per Investopedia's summary). SpaceX hasn't confirmed it in a filing.
  • What to listen for tonight: Q3 AI capex against Q2's $15.8B, cash left against the $100B Q2 figure, and any financing plan stated by the company itself.

The options market

  • TipRanks Options Tool: about ±7.8% (about $11.39) either way after the report, or roughly $134.64 to $157.42 from the Oct 16 close of $146.03. Another write-up quotes one analyst at about ±5.3%. Implied moves change daily and differ by source.
  • After its Q2 report in August, SPCX fell 13.61% in one day (TipRanks), a bigger move than options priced.
  • An implied move tells you how big a swing traders are paying for. It doesn't tell you which way.

Lock-up math: Thursday Oct 22, then Saturday Oct 24

From the 424B4 prospectus (filed Jun 12):

  • "The second full trading day on Nasdaq immediately following the public release of our quarterly financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026: up to 1.3 billion shares… 28% of the shares subject to the 180-day lock-up period." Results come out tonight after the close. Wednesday Oct 21 is the first full trading day after that and Thursday Oct 22 is the second. That's our reading of the prospectus wording against the confirmed date.
  • "October 24, 2026 (135th day): up to 328.4 million shares… 7%." That's a Saturday, so the first session those shares can trade is Monday Oct 26.
  • December 8, 2026 (180th day): the remaining 180-day shares (up to 328.4M or 797.6M depending on an earlier release condition).
  • Musk's shares: locked for 366 days, to June 12, 2027, with no early release.
  • Which date is right, Oct 22 or Oct 24? Both, for different batches. Our Oct 14 post called Oct 24 "next" because SpaceX hadn't set its Q3 date yet. Now that it has, the bigger, earnings-linked batch comes first, on Oct 22.
  • "Up to" means eligible, not sold. Some holders sell, many don't, and affiliates face extra limits. On past unlock days, trading volume was far below the eligible count (Motley Fool, cited in our Oct 14 post).
