Bloomberg Tech: "Tesla's Lowered Capex Plan Fuels Doubt on AI, Robotics Goals". Facts on this page cite the primary sources below, not the video.
Honest fence (read first): Our Oct 22 post covered Tesla's Q3 numbers and the capex cut. We won't repeat them. This post is about what came after: the written analyst notes from Oct 22 to 23, what each firm changed, and why the stock fell anyway. Today's two Optimus flagships cover the robot. This post doesn't.
Editorial Thesis
When a company beats estimates and a pile of analysts raise their targets, you'd expect the stock to rise. Tesla's fell 3.08% on Thursday, Oct 22, the first full session after the report, and slipped again Friday. That isn't a contradiction. A price target is one analyst's 12-month opinion, and most of the firms that raised theirs kept a Neutral or Hold rating. A higher target with the same cautious rating is a small move, not a cheer.
Honest Verdict
Believe the moves themselves. They're on the record, from named firms, with old and new numbers. Believe that the spread is huge: on S&P Global's count, targets run from $128.11 to $600. Don't read the average as a forecast. Read the notes to see what each firm thinks drives the stock, because they don't agree.
Who moved, and how far
From CNBC (Oct 22, 7:38 AM ET), TheFly/TipRanks, Investing.com and StockAnalysis (TipRanks data, updated Oct 23):

The average moved, a little
StockAnalysis, using S&P Global data, shows 43 analysts with an average target of $409.27 and a median of $430 as of early Monday, Oct 26. In our Oct 22 post, written before the notes came out, the same source showed 44 analysts and an average of $397.83. That's up about $11 (~3%): a nudge, not a rerating.
What the notes argue
The firms raising targets mostly pointed at different things:
- Self-driving uptake (UBS): 75% of North American Q3 deliveries included FSD, up 20 points from Q2. UBS raised its 2027 and 2028 EPS estimates to $2.02 and $3.17. It doesn't expect Robotaxi to be "financially material until late 2027 or 2028."
- Energy (Deutsche Bank): Megapack demand from data centers, with Tesla "almost sold out of Megapacks for 2027."
- The model math (Canaccord): 2028 EPS estimate up to $11.06, times a ~40x multiple, equals $442. Its note says other big tech stocks trade near 20x.
- Merger sentiment (CLSA): the upgrade to Hold cited a possible SpaceX combination, not the quarter.
- Spending (JPMorgan, Truist, Goldman): JPMorgan called the quarter "incrementally positive" but said the near-term story is "governed by rising spending." Truist said higher spending on AI projects "dragged meaningfully" on operating margin. Goldman sees profit and free cash flow "somewhat pressured" and valuation "full."
- The bear (HSBC, $157): management is "keen to suggest an acceleration in growth is on its way," despite soft reported growth.
Why the stock fell anyway
Three reasons from the coverage, none of them certain:
- Expectations ran high going in. TSLA rose 3.41% to $386.47 on Oct 21, the day of the report. Piper said the after-hours dip the post-earnings move "probably stems from elevated expectations following a SpaceX call."
- Timelines got longer, not shorter. William Blair (Market Perform) wrote that Musk "tempered expectations" on new-product ramps and Robotaxi revenue "for a year."
- Cautious ratings. JPMorgan, UBS and Morgan Stanley all raised targets but stayed at Neutral or Equal Weight.
What the market did
TSLA price (latest close): $372.22 at the Friday, Oct 23, 2026 close (4:00 PM ET, Nasdaq), down 0.63% on the day, per StockAnalysis / S&P Global Market Intelligence daily data, re-checked Monday Oct 26 at about 12:40 PM ET. Monday's session was still open at publish time: StockAnalysis showed TSLA at about $394.12, up 5.88%, at 12:21 PM ET. That intraday number will change before the close.
| Date | TSLA close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Wed Oct 21 (report after close) | $386.47 | +3.41% |
| Thu Oct 22 | $374.58 | -3.08% |
| Fri Oct 23 | $372.22 | -0.63% |
How to read a target change, as a learner
- Look at the rating, not just the target. A $15 bump at Neutral means less than an upgrade.
- Find the driver. UBS raised on FSD, CLSA on merger talk. Same direction, different reasons.
- Check the spread. When targets run from $128 to $600, nobody agrees on what the company is.
- Mind the date. Targets go stale fast. These are from Oct 22 to 23.
Claim vs proof
| Claim | Proof so far |
|---|---|
| "Wall Street loved the quarter" | Most raises came with Neutral/Hold ratings, and the stock fell 3.08% on Oct 22. |
| "Analysts expect $409" | That's an average of 43 opinions, with a low of $128 and a high of $600. |
| "FSD is driving the upside" | UBS and Piper say so; UBS still sees Robotaxi as immaterial until late 2027 to 2028. |
| "The merger supports the stock" | CLSA and JPMorgan say merger talk helps. No deal exists. |
What to watch next
- More notes after the Q3 10-Q (CLSA said it would update then).
- The Dec 3 annual meeting and any merger developments, since two firms tied their view to it.
- Q4 deliveries in early January, the next hard data point.

Bloomberg Tech's segment with Bloomberg's David Welch (nKSezNP7QCI, uploaded Fri Oct 23 at 9:32 AM ET) explains why the capex cut raised doubts. Bottom Line
Believe the moves themselves. They're on the record, from named firms, with old and new numbers. Believe that the spread is huge: on S&P Global's count, targets run from $128.11 to $600. Don't read the average as a forecast. Read the notes to see what each firm thinks drives the stock, because they don't agree.Disclaimer: Educational Purposes Only
