Honest fence (read first): These are preliminary figures from China's car industry group, not Tesla's own report, and they can be revised. Today's SpaceX SI Wednesday flagships are about SpaceX SI and aren't related to this post.
Editorial Thesis
On Tuesday, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released its first October numbers. Tesla sold 67,829 China-made cars at wholesale, according to CnEVPost's read of the data.
There are two ways to read that number, and both are true:
- Up 10.3% from October 2025.
- Down 28.9% from September's 95,366, and Tesla China's lowest month since February.
TSLA closed Tuesday at $398.50, down 1.32% from Monday's $403.82 (Yahoo Finance; the percentage is our math). That's the market's first read. A single day's move can't tell you how much of it was China.
Honest Verdict
- Confirmed (preliminary CPCA data): 67,829 China-made Teslas sold at wholesale in October.
- Confirmed (exchange data): TSLA closed at $398.50 on Nov. 3.
- Not known yet: how many of those cars stayed in China and how many were exported. That split usually comes later in the month.
What "wholesale" means here
The CPCA number counts every Model 3 and Model Y that leaves Tesla's Shanghai factory. That includes cars sold in China and cars shipped abroad to markets like Europe and Asia-Pacific. So a soft month could be weak Chinese demand, a shipping-schedule effect, or both.
Why October is often weak
Tesla tends to push deliveries hard in the last month of a quarter and ship cars to far-off markets early in the next. EVX News points out that October 2025 was 32% below September 2025, and October 2024 was 23% below September 2024. This year's drop lands between those two.
Year to date, the trend is still up: 810,889 cars from January to October, up 21.42%, per CnEVPost. The third quarter was a record at 275,111.
The part investors should watch: the mix
Shanghai's growth has come from exports, not China:
- January to September: Tesla sold 381,088 cars in China, down 11.93% from a year earlier.
- Same period: Shanghai exported 361,972 cars, up 108.44%.
- Exports were 48.71% of Shanghai's wholesale, up from 28.64% a year earlier.
(All via CnEVPost, compiled from CPCA data.)
Meanwhile China's overall market kept growing. The CPCA estimates passenger "new energy vehicle" (electric and plug-in hybrid) wholesale at about 1.8 million in October, up 12% on a year and 8% from September. Tesla's 10.3% annual growth slightly trailed that, and its monthly drop went the opposite way.
What Tesla is doing about China demand
At the end of October, Tesla China halved the minimum down payment on the Model 3 and Model Y to 39,900 yuan and added 0% financing, according to EVX News. That came too late to show up in October. November is the first month that tests it.
What to watch next
- The CPCA's domestic-versus-export split for October, later this month.
- November's preliminary number (early December), the first test of the new financing offer.
- Tesla's own Q4 delivery report in early January, which is the number that counts for earnings.
- How TSLA trades around the $400 level after closing below it Tuesday.
The video
Musk Markets TV (Nov. 3, 9:30) covers the October China figure, the $398.50 TSLA close and SPCX's day. It's a very small channel; the numbers above come from CnEVPost, CPCA and Yahoo Finance. Alternate: StockInvest.us, "Stock Market Today ... Tesla Falls | Nov. 4" (3:11), a broader market recap.
Bottom line
Tesla's Shanghai factory sold 67,829 cars in October: up 10.3% on a year, down 28.9% on a month, and the lowest since February. Part of that is the usual start-of-quarter dip. The real signal is still missing: how many of those cars Chinese buyers took home. TSLA closed at $398.50, down 1.32%.
Bottom Line
- Confirmed (preliminary CPCA data): 67,829 China-made Teslas sold at wholesale in October. - Confirmed (exchange data): TSLA closed at $398.50 on Nov. 3. - Not known yet: how many of those cars stayed in China and how many were exported. That split usually comes later in the month.Disclaimer: Educational Purposes Only
