Matt Palmer — “What's new in Grok Bot - Oct 18, 2026”. Facts on this page cite the primary sources below, not the video.

Honest fence (read first): On Friday, Oct 16 at 3:55 PM ET, the official @bot account posted a nine-part update thread. It said Grok Bot's "computer tasks finish 3x sooner on average, and replies to everything else arrive in less than half the time." It also said Grok Bot "can now read X Chat" after you connect X, and that it now connects to Robinhood, Coinbase, Trello, PostHog, beehiiv and eToro, with teams able to submit their own connectors to the marketplace. The 3x figure is SpaceXSI's own average. It hasn't published the tasks, baseline or method behind it, and the public Grok Bot changelog still listed v0.71.2 (Oct 14) as the latest release when we checked at about 5 AM ET today. This is not a re-cover of our Oct 13 post on searching public X without a connector; that was about public posts. This one is about your private X Chat messages and money apps.

Editorial Thesis

Speed is the easiest thing for an agent company to claim and the hardest thing for a user to check. "3x sooner on average" could mean a lot, or it could mean the slow startup step got fixed. The more important change in this thread is what Grok Bot can now touch: your X direct messages, plus brokerage and crypto accounts. Those deserve a closer read than the speed headline.

Honest Verdict

Believe that the update shipped. It's in the official @bot thread, Musk amplified it, and a product walkthrough video shows the features. Treat "3x faster" as a company claim until SpaceXSI publishes how it measured it, or until users time the same task before and after. Treat X Chat access as real, opt-in and new. The exact limits (read only, draft replies, or send replies) aren't clearly documented yet, and different sources describe it differently.

What @bot actually said (Oct 16, in order)

  1. Cards in chat have "a new design with a cleaner layout."
  2. A "refreshed look with a new typeface and themes."
  3. "Computer tasks finish 3x sooner on average, and replies to everything else arrive in less than half the time."
  4. Voice calls are "faster, more reliable, and better at remembering past conversations."
  5. Email "now supports plus aliases, so you can set a routine to run only on mail sent to one address."
  6. "Tag @bot in a post on X and Grok Bot gets to work."
  7. "Notifications now go only to the device you're using."
  8. "Grok Bot can now read X Chat. Connect X, then ask Bot to work across your messages."
  9. "Grok Bot now connects to Robinhood, Coinbase, Trello, PostHog, beehiiv, eToro, and more. Teams can also now submit connectors to the Grok Bot marketplace."

Musk quoted the speed post at 7:35 PM ET: "Grok @Bot got much faster." It had about 5.1 million views when we checked.

The speed claim: what "3x" can and can't tell you

  • Who measured it: SpaceXSI, on its own system. No independent test has been published.
  • What was measured: "computer tasks," an average across tasks, with no list of tasks, no baseline version and no time window. "Less than half the time" for other replies has the same gap.
  • What's missing: a changelog entry. The public changelog's latest release is v0.71.2 from Oct 14. That one is about notifications, larger attachments (up to 250 MB files, 1 GB video) and computer wake-up fixes, not a 3x speed number.
  • How you can check it yourself: time one repeatable job, like "open this site, fill this form, save a PDF," and compare against an older chat log of the same job. One user's stopwatch isn't a benchmark, but it's more than a slogan.

X Chat: the bigger change

  • What's official: connect X, then the Bot can "read X Chat" and "work across your messages."
  • What's described differently elsewhere: Matt Palmer's walkthrough says Grok Bot can "read your X Chat DMs and respond to them for you." Paul Vann, who announced the X Chat feature on Oct 16, said his bot spent the week "reviewing new message requests… approving them."
  • What we couldn't confirm: whether DM replies wait for your approval the way email does. The Oct 11 changelog says email a Bot sends from its own address "waits for your approval on a draft card." We found no matching line for X Chat replies.
  • Practical rule: until it's documented, have the Bot draft replies and send them yourself. A list of "messages that need you, with a suggested reply" gives you most of the benefit with none of the risk of a bot speaking for you.

Money apps: Robinhood, Coinbase, eToro

  • The thread lists the connectors. It doesn't say whether they're read-only or can place trades.
  • One documented guardrail (changelog v0.70.2, Oct 11): "After a bank or brokerage connector returns data, the Bot asks before sharing it anywhere else."
  • Sensible use while the details are thin: portfolio summaries and alerts. Keep every trade a manual step. (AI Shift News doesn't give investment advice. This is a settings note.)

The smaller items that matter

  • Plus-alias email: one address per job (receipts, newsletters), with a routine that runs only for mail to that alias. Sam Sokolin announced it on Oct 14.
  • Tag @bot on X: the walkthrough says you install and configure the X plugin first.
  • Voice memory: the walkthrough says if you "call back within 30 minutes" the Bot remembers the previous call and its full transcript. That's a specific limit worth knowing.
  • Notifications now go to the device you're using, not every device.

Claim vs proof

Claim Proof so far Status
Computer tasks 3x sooner on average @bot post, Oct 16; Musk "much faster" Company claim, no method
Reads X Chat after you connect X @bot post; Paul Vann demo post; walkthrough Shipped, opt-in
Replies to DMs for you Walkthrough description; Vann "approving" Unclear; not in docs
Robinhood, Coinbase, eToro, Trello, PostHog, beehiiv @bot post Listed; scope not published
Teams can submit connectors @bot post Announced; process not documented in thread
Voice remembers past calls @bot post; walkthrough "within 30 minutes" Shipped, with a time limit

What to watch next

  • A changelog entry for the Oct 16 release with real numbers or task examples.
  • Docs on X Chat: read-only vs draft vs send, and whether replies need approval.
  • Connector scopes for the finance apps (read balances vs place orders).
  • Any third-party timing tests.

Video note

Matt Palmer, "What's new in Grok Bot - Oct 18, 2026" (zNgCdQt1qB8), uploaded Tue Oct 20, 12:09 AM ET. It's part of a weekly "What's new in Grok Bot" series that links to the official Grok Bot download pages, so treat it as a product walkthrough, not independent testing. Useful chapters: 00:31 "Bot's computer is 3x faster", 01:33 "Read and reply to X Chat DMs", 02:31 "New connectors", 02:48 "Voice calls remember earlier calls".

Bottom Line

Believe that the update shipped. It's in the official @bot thread, Musk amplified it, and a product walkthrough video shows the features. Treat "3x faster" as a company claim until SpaceXSI publishes how it measured it, or until users time the same task before and after. Treat X Chat access as real, opt-in and new. The exact limits (read only, draft replies, or send replies) aren't clearly documented yet, and different sources describe it differently.
