Meta says its Meta AI app can plan tasks, connect to email and calendar services, create slides and deliver recurring briefings. The practical issue is not whether the assistant can make a plan—it is what information and permissions you are prepared to grant it.

Meta AI’s new task features may be useful, but the first question is not “What can it plan for me?” It is “What does it need access to before it can do that?”

Meta says Meta AI can now make plans, connect to email and calendar apps, create slides, research a topic and deliver recurring updates such as daily briefings or weekly plans. The company says the features are powered by Muse Spark 1.1 and are rolling out first in select markets through the Meta AI app and meta.ai.

That is a real product direction: AI assistants are moving from answering a prompt to working with information that changes over time.

The appealing use cases are easy to understand. Meta suggests a kitchen-renovation plan, a training schedule that adjusts to availability, a birthday-dinner search that checks your calendar, and recurring briefings that spot schedule conflicts. For someone juggling work, family and projects, a useful assistant could save time on the small coordination jobs that keep piling up.

But this is exactly where a casual AI experiment becomes a permissions decision.

An assistant cannot notice a calendar conflict without calendar information. It cannot create a useful briefing from your work unless it can reach relevant sources. And it cannot act on your behalf unless you define what “act” means: draft a plan, create an event, send a reminder, or potentially share information with another service.

Meta’s own announcement says users can steer work while it is underway and that generated plans, reports and slides are stored in one place. That may be convenient. It also means users should understand which connected apps are active, what the assistant can access, how long data is retained, and how to revoke access.

Meta points to Incognito chats for private conversations, but that is not a substitute for reading the permissions attached to a connected workflow. Incognito is a chat setting; connected tools and scheduled actions create a separate set of practical questions.

The sensible way to try these features is to start small. Use a low-risk task with little sensitive information: a public event roundup, a personal grocery-plan reminder, or a research summary based on links you supply. Avoid connecting financial accounts, private work mailboxes or sensitive family documents just to test a feature.

Then check the output. Did it use the right dates? Did it make an assumption you would not make? Can you edit or delete the task quickly? Is the time saved worth the access you granted?

The broader lesson is simple: the most important AI feature may not be the model. It may be the permission screen.

What to watch: which markets receive the rollout, what connections Meta adds, whether task controls become clearer, and whether users can meaningfully limit what an assistant can see and do. Convenience matters. So does staying in charge.
