What happened
Tesla held the Roadster event Thursday, Oct 15, 2026 at 7:55 PM Central (8:55 PM ET) at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, near Waco, Texas. It had been pushed from Oct 1 because of weather. Elon Musk, design chief Franz von Holzhausen and vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy were there (CNBC).
TechCrunch reports the demo showed the car using a mix of high-powered fans and thrusters to drive up an inverted ramp, spin around and ease down to the pavement. The car also used thrusters to lift over a Cybercab, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, Model Y and Model 3 while moving. Moravy said it uses 10 nozzles fed by 600 liters of compressed air, and that the tank can be recharged.
The design is new: a white, angular body that TechCrunch compares to a Lamborghini or the Lotus Esprit from a Bond film. On stage screens in the stream, "0-60mph 1 sec" was shown. Tesla then clocked 0.81 seconds, and Musk said they expect to do better (Engadget live blog, Road & Track).
Claim vs proof
| Claim | What was shown or said | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Roadster with SpaceX thrusters ("fly a little") | Live demo: ramp climb, spin, landing, lift over five Tesla vehicles | Shown on stream (per TechCrunch and the stream) |
| 0-60 mph in about 1 second, then 0.81 s | Stage screens read "0-60mph 1 sec"; Tesla then clocked 0.81 s and Musk said "We anticipate being able to do better than that" (Engadget live blog; Road & Track) | Clocked on the event stream, not independently tested. Engadget notes nobody appeared to time the first run. Conditions not stated |
| "This will be the actual car that's on the roads" (Musk) | Said on stage | Claim. Pre-event reports said the demo car was remote-operated and not street legal. Not confirmed either way at the event |
| Production | Musk: Tesla will build it in 2028 | Claim. No firm delivery date |
| Price | None named | Not announced. 2017 figure was $200,000 base, $250,000 Founders Series |
| Range 620 miles, top speed 250+ mph, 4 seats | 2017 targets. Not confirmed for the new car in coverage I found | Unconfirmed |
| Reservations | Tesla's page: $50,000 = $5,000 card now + $45,000 wire within 10 days; page calls the card payment fully refundable | Strong (Tesla reserve page) |
Promised vs delivered
- Nov 2017: Roadster shown at the Semi event, $50,000 deposits, delivery promised for 2020.
- 2018: Musk tweeted about a SpaceX option package with about 10 small rocket thrusters that "maybe" lets a Tesla fly.
- Late 2025: demo moved to April 1, 2026 ("some deniability"), then repeatedly later, then Oct 1, then Oct 15 (weather).
- Oct 15, 2026: a demo. Screens showed 0-60 in 1 sec, then Tesla clocked 0.81 s, with Musk saying they expect to do better. Production now stated as 2028, no price.
That is nine years from first deposit to a stage demo, with the earliest buyers still without a car.
What we still do not know
- Price, and whether the thruster package is standard or optional.
- Final range, battery size, charging rate, curb weight.
- Whether the car shown is the production design or a demo vehicle.
- How 2017 reservation holders and Founders Series buyers are treated versus new $50,000 reservations.
- Real delivery dates.
Verdict
Believe what is on video: the car hovered, spun and landed in front of a live crowd. Treat the 0.81 s 0-60, the "actual car" line and the 2028 start as claims until Tesla publishes specs, a price and a date. A demo is not a delivery.
