Sourcery with Molly O'Shea: "Thrive Capital's Dr. Nworah Ayogu on Why Neuralink Is More Interesting Than SpaceX". Facts on this page cite the primary sources below, not the video.
Honest fence (read first): This is a story about one sentence in a securities filing. Nothing here is a new implant, a new patient or new trial data. Neuralink is private and discloses very little about how it is run, so a single line in someone else's filing is worth reading carefully, and not worth over-reading.
Editorial Thesis
On Monday, Oct 19, 2026, Tesla filed its proxy for the Dec 3 annual meeting. In Elon Musk's director biography, Neuralink is now described as a company "where he serves as the Chief Executive Officer." Last year's proxy only called him "a founder." That change is real and on the record. What it doesn't do is open up Neuralink: there's still no public board list, no published org chart and no explanation of what changed, if anything, inside the company.
Honest Verdict
Believe the filing: Tesla, in a document it files under penalty of securities law, now says Musk is Neuralink's CEO. Believe Neuralink's own most recent SEC filing too: a June 2025 Form D that lists Jared Birchall as an executive officer and director (he signed it as Secretary) and Musk as an executive officer. The two don't contradict each other, because a Form D doesn't give job titles. Don't read the new line as a sign of a shake-up, a new strategy or progress in the clinic. None of that is in the filing.
What changed, word for word
| Filing | What it says about Musk and Neuralink |
|---|---|
| Tesla 2025 proxy (filed Sep 17, 2025) | "Mr. Musk is also a founder of The Boring Company ... and Neuralink Corporation, a company focused on developing brain-machine interfaces." |
| Tesla 2026 proxy (filed Oct 19, 2026) | "Mr. Musk is also a founder of The Boring Company ... and Neuralink Corp., a company focused on developing brain-machine interfaces, where he serves as the Chief Executive Officer." |
The Boring Company line didn't change: he's still listed as its founder only. The WSJ spotted the change the same day (Becky Peterson, Oct 19, 11:30 AM ET), noting that Musk has called himself Neuralink's CEO before and was widely assumed to run it, but that Neuralink has disclosed little about its governance since it started in 2016.
What Neuralink itself has filed
Neuralink files almost nothing with the SEC. The documents that exist are Form D notices, which private companies file when they raise money. The latest, filed June 12, 2025, reports $649,000,093 sold to 49 investors (first sale May 30, 2025). Its "related persons" section lists just two people:
- Jared Birchall: Executive Officer and Director. He signed the form, as Secretary.
- Elon Musk: Executive Officer.
The November 2023 amended Form D ($323,241,676) lists the same two people in the same roles. Form D asks for roles, not titles, so it can't confirm or deny who holds the CEO title. It does show who signs Neuralink's paperwork.
Why a bio line matters at all
Two reasons, both about attention rather than brain implants.
- Tesla's own board flagged it. In the 2025 proxy, where Tesla made its case for Musk's pay package, it listed "Mr. Musk's other ventures, including SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink Corporation and TBC" among the reasons he might find other companies "more attractive." A formal CEO title at Neuralink adds one more top job to that list. Tesla shareholders vote on re-electing Musk as a director at the Dec 3 meeting.
- It's the first formal leadership line in a long time. Neuralink's public faces are its president, DJ Seo, its engineers and its trial participants. The company doesn't publish a leadership page with titles. A filing that names a CEO is more than it usually tells you.
What the line does not tell you
- Who is on Neuralink's board, beyond the one director named on the Form D.
- Whether anything changed inside the company, or whether the bio just caught up with how Musk already described himself.
- Anything about the trials. The last update Neuralink itself posted was the Oct 1 decoder pretraining post (50,000+ hours of participant data). Musk's Oct 16 post that "Neuralink will help millions of people" is a goal, not a result.
- Anything about money. The last priced raise on file is the June 2025 round. Private-market valuations you see quoted are secondary trades, not company disclosures.
Claim vs proof
| Claim | Proof so far |
|---|---|
| "Musk is Neuralink's CEO" | Tesla's Oct 19 proxy says so. That's a formal disclosure, by Tesla. |
| "This is a big change at Neuralink" | Nothing in the filing says what, if anything, changed inside Neuralink. |
| "Birchall runs Neuralink" | Neuralink's June 2025 Form D lists him as executive officer, director and signer. No title is given. |
| "Neuralink will help millions" (Musk, Oct 16) | About 21 people were enrolled as of Neuralink's Jan 28 update. "Millions" is a goal. |
What to watch next
- Neuralink's next Form D, if it raises again: who's listed, and in what roles.
- Tesla's Dec 3 meeting: shareholder questions about Musk's time across companies.
- A Neuralink leadership page or press release naming titles. That would settle it.
- The trials: new participant counts or published results matter far more than titles.
Video note
Sourcery's long interview with Thrive Capital partner Dr. Nworah Ayogu (gYA2yyV6U5E, uploaded Wed Oct 14, 9:00 AM ET) gives an investor's view of Neuralink. Thrive lists Neuralink in its healthcare portfolio, so treat it as a backer talking, not an independent review. Alternate: Huberman Lab Essentials with Neuralink neurosurgeon Dr. Matthew MacDougall (YdIJW8RTptU, Oct 15). The facts in this post come from the filings, not the videos.
Bottom Line
Believe the filing: Tesla, in a document it files under penalty of securities law, now says Musk is Neuralink's CEO. Believe Neuralink's own most recent SEC filing too: a June 2025 Form D that lists Jared Birchall as an executive officer and director (he signed it as Secretary) and Musk as an executive officer. The two don't contradict each other, because a Form D doesn't give job titles. Don't read the new line as a sign of a shake-up, a new strategy or progress in the clinic. None of that is in the filing.Sources
